A Message From Brian:
The week of August 16th, five Third Party candidates were forced off the ballot due to challenges from the major parties, but also under threat of tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees. Both John Krupa (Tea Party) and Marakay Rogers (Libertarian) collected more than twice the number of signatures in one year (minimum of 19,087) than Ed Rendell was required in his eight years as Governor to be on the ballot (2,000 signatures, 2 primaries = 4,000). Doug Jamison (Libertarian) and Mel Packer (Green) collected more than Arlen Specter needed to during this 30 years in the Senate (2,000 signatures, 6 primaries = 12,000).
Despite having met the outrageous signatures requirements, Republican and Democrat Party Leaders challenged or assisted other in challenging the signatures submitted. These challenges ranged from reasonable (not a registered voter) to the nit-picky (missing an intial or use of anickname). Unfortunately, the burden of proof was not on the accuser (R's and D's) to prove the fault, but the defender (Green, Libertarian and Tea Party) to prove their worth. Due to the volume of signatures challenged, and the penalties that could be incurred if the challenge proceeded, the five candidates were forced to withdraw, or face the possibility of personal bankruptcy and draining their party's reserves.
Serious reform needs to happen in ballot access laws to help alleviate this issue. Sen. Mike Folmer has introduced Senate Bill 252, the "Voters Choice Act", which would reduce the signature requirements for minor parties to equal those for Republican and Democrats. It would also reduce the threshold to be considered a political party to 0.05% of all registered voters in the state. This would allow Libertarians, Green and Constitution to be recognized as Minor Political Parties (which Libertarians will lose due to no state-wide candidates on the ballot for 2010), with all the duties and responsibilities that come with the title. Sen. Lisa Baker has signed on as a co-sponsor to this bill. Please contact your State Senator and ask them to review and support this bill.

Memorial Day:
In memory of: Cptn. John Lovewell (Indian Wars), Lt. Nathan Brigham (Revolutionary War), Caleb Emert, George Ragan and John Bergmann (Civil War), James Leabo (WWI), Raymond Justus and John Frank Bergmann (WW II). Ancestors and other family members who served and sometimes died in service to their country. May their sacrificies not have been in vain.
A Letter From Brian
Too many of our elected officials have become career politicians, looking out for only themselves and expanding their powerbase. I am not a politican and will not become a career politican. If you send me to Harrisburg, I will be a citizen representative. I will be YOUR advocate in Harrisburg, the voice of the PEOPLE.
Working with fellow Libertarian candidates Betsy Summers (State Senate, 14th District) and Tim Mullen (State Rep, 120th District), we can make a major difference in Harribsurg to cut the size of government, reduce spending in Harrisburg, and restoring rights and liberties to all the citizens of Pennsylvania.
